Savitri Puja 2024: Time, Tithi, And Benefits

Savitri Puja 2024 Date and Time

Vat Savitri Vrat 2024 is observed on the Amavasya of the Jyestha Month, although some regions in India celebrate it on the full moon day of the same month. This year, Vat Savitri Vrat will be on Thursday, June 6, 2024.

During Vat Savitri Puja, women worship Lord Vishnu under the Banyan Tree. Performing this Vrat with proper rituals brings the blessings of Lord Vishnu, Brahma, and Shankar to the couple.

In 2024, Vat Savitri Puja coincides with the auspicious Chaitra Navratri, which starts on April 9th and ends on April 16th.

The Historical Significance of Savitri Puja

Vat Savitri Puja holds deep significance for married women in Sanatan Dharma. The Banyan tree, revered for its sacredness and believed to house the deities Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, is central to the celebration. Given the tree's long lifespan, it symbolises the long life for which women pray for their husbands. The puja commemorates Savitri, who, through her devoted fasting, brought her husband Satyavan back from the dead. Observing this fast is believed to bless women with a happy married life and children.

This ancient festival is celebrated by married Hindu women across India to honour Savitri's devotion and her successful efforts to save her husband from death, highlighting the strength of a wife's love and dedication. The rituals of the puja, including fasting and praying around the Banyan tree, symbolise Savitri's steadfast fidelity and perseverance.

Savitri Vrat Katha

In Madras, King Ashwapati was childless and performed a Yagya to have a child, resulting in the birth of his daughter, Savitri. When it was time for her marriage, Savitri chose Satyavan, the son of a deposed king who lived in poverty and sold wood for a living. Despite sage Narad’s warning that Satyavan would die within a year of their marriage, Savitri remained resolute in her decision and married him, devoting herself to serving her new family.

As the predicted day of Satyavan's death approached, Savitri accompanied him to the forest. Satyavan fell ill while cutting wood, and soon Yamaraj, the god of death, appeared to take his soul. Savitri followed Yamaraj, insisting that she should stay with her husband. Impressed by her devotion, Yamaraj granted her three boons. First, she requested the restoration of her blind in-laws' sight, then the return of their lost kingdom, and finally, to become the mother of Satyavan's sons.

Realizing that the last boon implied Satyavan's life, Yamaraj was moved by Savitri's steadfastness and released Satyavan's soul. Satyavan revived, his parents regained their sight, and they reclaimed their kingdom. Thus, Savitri's unwavering dedication and love brought her husband back to life and restored her family's fortunes.
