Gopi chandanam, is a traditional mark that is worn by followers Madhwa sampradhya and Vadama sect of Smarthas. Believed that Sri Krishna has taken the form of Gopi Chandanam. These sticks are made from Gopi (natural non corrosive churnam), usually taken from Dwaraka, the place of Sri Krishna. It is also believed this gopi chandana, are the remains of Gopikas cosmetics. And a person who applies this mark on the specified places over the body, remains purified by bathing in Ganga. Wearing Gopi chandana wards off all sins and doshas and remains close to Sri Krishnas conscious.
