Guhan, the chieftain of the Kols of Sringiverapuram was a friend of Lord Rama. It was Guhan who helped Lord Rama, Seeta and Lakshman to cross the Ganga River in his boat in their journey to Dhandakaranya as part of their Vanvasa. His role in the story, although short-lived, was an important one. Guhan, as was discovered through research, is apparently the ancestor of the present day Kol tribe. Lord Rama, known to be compassionate towards every being, hugs the hunter to show his affection and friendship which surprises even Lakshmana. He never had any trace of the arrogance that a royal prince was expected to possess, or the ego of a kshatriya of the time. He never forgot the childhood bond he had with him.
