When it comes to Indian Classical music, particularly Karnatik Sangeetham, the era of three saints is the most spoken of and their kirtans, the most sung and well-known. Sangita Mummoortigal, also known as Isai Moovar in Tamil and Musical Trinity, and Three Jewels of Music in English, refers to the three great composers who made a revolution and popularised Carnatic Music. They are Shyama Shastri, Tyagaraja, and Mutthuswami Dikshitar. All three composers were born in Thiruvarur, formerly part of Thanjavur District in Tamilnadu. Dikshitar mainly composed in Sanskrit and Manipravalam (Tamil and Sanskrit), while Tyagaraja and Syama Sastri mainly composed in Telugu. The Trinity of Carnatic music composed new ragas and talas, and had a remarkable ability to introduce innovations within the same raga.
