To spread his teachings to followers, Adi Shankaracharya is thought to have founded four mathas, or Advaita monasteries, all over India. The Sringeri Sharada Peetham in Karnataka was the first of these four mathas to be built. The presiding deity of the Sringeri Sharada Peetham is Saraswati, the Hindu goddess of learning and the arts. Legend has it that Adi Shankaracharya created an idol of the Goddess out of sandalwood, which was later replaced by one made of gold during the rule of the Vijayanagara empire. Along with the shrine for Goddess Saraswati, there are two other shrines inside the temple, one each for Lord Ganesha and Bhuvaneshvari. Each year, Navarati festival of Sringeri is celebrated in the Sharadamba temple and has been a crowd-puller for years. Also, the annual chariot festival celebrated in February or March is popular amongst the tourists.

The establishment of the Dakshinamnaya Peetham by Sri Shankara Bhagavatpada marks the beginning of the illustrious history of the ancient temple of Sri Sharada, the presiding deity of Sringeri. Originally, it was a simple shrine with a sandalwood Sharada Murti installed over a rock-carved Sri Chakra by Sri Adi Shankara. After that, a temple with a timber and tiled roof and built in the Keralan style was commissioned by Sri Bharati Krishna Tirtha and Sri Vidyaranya. The current golden idol was put in place of the sandalwood idol by Sri Bharati Krishna Tirtha. In Sri Sharada Shrine, a special Puja is performed on the day of Chaitra Shukla Poornima. On Vaisaka Krishna Prathipath Mahabhishekam, Sri Sharadambal receives special pooja.

In Sri Sharada Shrine, Deepotsava is held on the day of Karthika Poornima. Lalitha Panchami is observed on the Magha Shukla Panchami with a special Puja offered to Sri Sharadamba by the Jagadguru. The Jagadguru offers a special Puja to Sri Sharadamba on the Magha Krishna Dwithiya. The Sri Sharadamba Rathotsava is observed on the Magha Trithia.
