The Story of Divine Creation
The most popular legend of Ganesha’s birth begins with Goddess Parvati. While her husband, Lord Shiva, was away meditating, Parvati desired a loyal guard to protect her privacy while she bathed. Using her divine power, she created a handsome boy from sandalwood paste and turmeric, breathing life into him.
When Lord Shiva returned, he was stopped at the entrance by the young boy, who was strictly following his mother’s orders. Unaware of the boy's identity and enraged by the defiance, Shiva severed the child’s head during a fierce battle. Seeing her son lifeless, Parvati’s grief turned to fury, and she threatened to destroy the universe.
To appease her, Shiva promised to restore the boy's life. He instructed his followers to bring the head of the first living creature they found facing north—which happened to be a young elephant. The Cosmic Race: Once, Shiva challenged his sons, Ganesha and Kartikeya, to a race around the universe. The winner would be declared the elder and worshipped first.
The Victor's Wisdom: While Kartikeya set off on his peacock to fly across the world, Ganesha simply walked three times around his parents, Shiva and Parvati. He explained that his parents represented the entire universe to him.
