It is not only a religious festival, but it also unites people and brings peace and happiness everywhere.

The Story Behind Ganesh Chaturthi

The story of Lord Ganesha’s birth is very popular in Hindu tradition. Once, Goddess Parvati made a boy from sandalwood paste to guard her while she took a bath. She gave life to the boy and asked him not to let anyone in. When Lord Shiva, her husband, came & tried to enter, the boy stopped him. Not knowing who he was, Shiva got angry and then cut off the boy's head.

Parvati was deeply hurt and upset. To make things right, Lord Shiva promised to bring the boy back to life. He sent his followers to find the head of the first living being they saw. They found an elephant and brought its head. Shiva fixed the elephant head on the boy’s body and gave him life again. He named him Ganesha and blessed him to be worshipped before any other god. This day of his birth is now celebrated as Ganesh Chaturthi.

When is Ganesh Chaturthi in 2025?

In 2025, Ganesh Chaturthi is on August 27th, which is a Wednesday. It is celebrated on Chaturthi tithi of Bhadrapada month's bright half of the Hindu calendar. The day is remembered with huge devotion and people bring Ganesha idols to their houses for puja and worship. The festival typically continues for ten days.

The last day of Ganesh Chaturthi festivities is referred to as Ganesh Visarjan, which will be held on Saturday, 6th September in 2025. This is the day when the idol of Lord Ganesha is immersed in water. It's an emotional mix of happiness in the festivities but also grief in bidding farewell to Bappa, hoping he comes back early next year.

How Do People Celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi?

People welcome Lord Ganesha into their homes with full heart. They bring idols of Ganesha and place them on decorated platforms. These idols are made of clay or eco-friendly material nowadays because of the damage caused to water during visarjan. Before placing the idol, a small prayer called pran pratistha is done to invite the divine spirit into the idol.

Homes are decorated with flowers, diyas, and colourful rangoli. Families perform aarti in the morning and evening, offer modaks and laddoos, and sing bhajans. The house is not only filled with divine energy but also tons of joy. Children take part in puja, elders bless everyone, and guests often come to take darshan of Bappa and join the aarti.

Modaks – Lord Ganesha's Favourite

Modak is a sweet dumpling that is Lord Ganesha's favourite. It is prepared with rice or wheat flour which is stuffed with jaggery and coconut and nuts. In Maharashtra, families prepare steamed modaks that are soft and healthy. Some also fry modaks for a crunchy taste. Families sit together in the kitchen to prepare modaks with love and offer it during puja.

Visiting Pandals and Public Celebrations

In most cities, public Ganesh pandals are the center of attraction in the festival. Mumbai and Pune have gigantic pandals with beautiful decorations and tall idols. They are visited by people from all parts of the world to see these idols and seek blessings. Some idols are over 20 feet tall and months in the making. These pandals usually have long queues and huge crowds, but the people's devotion is all worth it.

Most pandals also organize cultural events such as music concerts, dance recitals, skits and social activities such as blood donation, free food distribution, and assisting poor individuals. It becomes a period of communal bonding. All, poor and rich alike, come together to celebrate and experience the divine presence of Ganesha in their lives.

Ganesh Visarjan – The Emotional Goodbye

After keeping Lord Ganesha at home or pandal for 1.5, 3, 5, 7, or 10 days, it’s time to bid him goodbye. This process is called Ganesh Visarjan. The idol is taken in a small procession with music, drums, dancing, and joyful slogans. People chant “Ganpati Bappa Morya, Pudhchya Varshi Lavkar Ya” which means, “Come back soon next year, Lord Ganesha!”

Though the moment is happy, it also makes people emotional. They feel a strong connection with Bappa and don’t want him to go. But they believe that he will return next year with more blessings. The immersion is done in rivers, lakes, seas, or artificial tanks while offering flowers and prayers. It is believed that the god returns to his heavenly home after the visarjan.

Eco-Friendly Ganesh Chaturthi

In recent years, there is more awareness about pollution caused by immersion of painted or plaster idols. So many families now choose eco-friendly clay idols which dissolve easily in water. Some people use idols with plant seeds in them, which grow into a plant after immersion in soil. It is a beautiful way of celebrating without harming the earth.
